There’s no doubt that the cloud offers a strong argument for convenience when it comes to data storage, as well as some peace-of-mind. If you lose information on a device due to a technical failure, theft or loss, a backup of data in the cloud can be a lifesaver. Additionally, the ability to access and use data online from anywhere is a huge convenience. But when it comes to storing sensitive data, is the cloud safe for personal information?
Using the online processing power of cloud computing and its backup features has its advantages, but it also has its drawbacks. Cyberattacks are a very valid threat to any information stored in the cloud, as evidenced by serious data breaches circulating in the news nearly every day. Cloud storage is amassed on large servers often in undisclosed locations, but because of the worldwide connectivity of the internet there is always increased risk of cyberattacks and hacking by bad actors with malevolent intentions. Some of the biggest names in cloud computing and online data storage have suffered catastrophic ruptures when cybersecurity was compromised, damaging the trust the service originally meant to provide. The Ponemon Institute, a prominent security research organization in their 2022 report indicated that 45% of the 550 organizations around the globe that suffered a data breach occurred in the cloud. However, you can greatly minimize and perhaps even eliminate the risks with the right tools to keep your data safe and still be able to maintain the convenience of accessing your information quickly.

The Kanguru Defender LifePlanner is a unique, personal, encrypted life organizer and Password Manager using localized encrypted storage away from the cloud. It’s the first of its kind to provide anyone looking for a way to completely organize and secure their personal information with a resilient, easy-to-use database housed on a biometric fingerprint access, hardware encrypted USB device. You can use the device to store all of your important digital information, access and search all of your personal data, keep it in a safe, or carry it with you wherever you go. The durable platform uses Kanguru’s proven, military grade cryptographic technology trusted worldwide by organizations for decades. Individuals can organize all of their personal data into specific categories, store and secure important documents, manage passwords, easily access private account numbers, insurance policies, finances, Wills & Trusts, contacts, doctors, pharmacists, medications – anything, under secure FIPS 197 Certified, AES-256 Bit hardware encryption. With 2 independent levels of security, and the ability to search your own personal information, the advantages are remarkable. Even better, the autonomous device is independent of the internet, keeping access to personal information away from prying hands of bad actors. USBtoCloud®
USBtoCloud is a unique service provided by ClevX® for select Kanguru Defender USB Flash Drives that allows users to upload an encrypted backup of their data to their favorite cloud provider. Users of certain Defender USB flash drives can upload an encrypted backup file to services like OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, Amazon S3, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, and others plus NAS via included USBtoCloud software. If the user loses the flash drive or it is stolen, the encrypted file can be reloaded from the cloud to another drive with no loss of data. Since Defender USB drives inherently protect from unauthorized access, there’s no danger of a thief cracking the password to access the stolen drive, and even if a fraudulent hacker were to penetrate the barriers on the cloud service, the uploaded file with your data would still be encrypted and impenetrable.
Kanguru Defender® Hardware Encrypted USB Drives
Kanguru’s line of Defender AES 256-Bit hardware encrypted USB drives have been trusted by high security organizations around the world, including defense, nuclear, financial, energy and utilities, medical, SMBs, and education for many years. With FIPS 140-2 and Common Criteria Certified models available, digitally-signed secure firmware, physical write protect switch and the option for fully-integrated remote management with KRMC, Defender secure USB flash drives, hard drives, solid state drives and biometric flash drives provide superior data security. Select drives also provide the option to upload an encrypted backup file to a select cloud provider for extra convenience.

Kanguru Remote Management Console™ (KRMC™)
For large organizations, businesses or even individuals who wish to monitor, manage and add an additional level of security to Kanguru Defender encrypted USB devices, Kanguru Remote Management Console™ (KRMC™) allows an IT Administrator or Security Officer to manage all of the security parameters of the organization’s Defender drives. Kanguru offers three great options for remote management; KRMC Cloud, KRMC Cloud PRO, and KRMC Enterprise. KRMC Cloud allows one administrator to manage Defender drives. KRMC Cloud PRO allows a Super-Administrator to manage other administrators, allowing multiple levels of management options. KRMC Enterprise is a self-hosted version for clients who wish to manage through their organization’s own enterprise servers. None of the encrypted data itself is held in the cloud, as it remains secured within the USB device itself, but KRMC uses a secure cloud interface hosted on Kanguru’s enterprise-level cloud-hosting platform to allow a manager to enforce company security policies, message Defender drive users, disable or delete lost or stolen drives, and much more.

Kanguru Endpoint Protection (AntiVirus)
In addition, Kanguru provides Defender secure USB drive users with the option of real-time, onboard antivirus protection from award-winning Bitdefender® and is available in 1-year, 2-year or 3-year license subscriptions. Managers can provide this option automatically with KRMC, or users can choose to activate it for their own devices. AntiVirus protection consistently scans the secure USB drive in the background, detecting and fixing virus issues before files are copied onto the drive, protecting the drive from viruses, malware, trojans and other malicious programs.
